The question I get asked most often is “What is Reiki”?  It is often a hard question to answer depending on your belief system.  I believe the International Center for Reiki Training came up with an excellent definition … The word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is made up of two Japanese words … Rei when means “God’s Wisdom or Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”.  So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

Reiki is a Japanese technique used for stress reduction and relaxation, and also promotes healing.  Reiki healing is a natural therapy that gently balances your life energies and brings you health and well being.  It is a very subtle type of energy work that is performed by the gentle touch of the Reiki practitioner.

The wonderful thing I find about Reiki is that I can practice it wherever I am.  My hands, my heart and my spirit are all I need to give a treatment.  I get just as much out of a Reiki treatment as my client … I usually feel very relaxed or refreshed after giving a treatment.  My practice has evolved to include many companion animals as well.  Animals are wonderful conduits for Reiki energy.  They don’t have any of those pesky negative thoughts or emotions which may hinder the flow of energy.  Dogs, cats and horses have responded positively to treatments.  I even had one horse follow me out of her stall because she wanted me to continue with the treatment!

Recently, I have begun volunteering at the Humane Society of Tucson administering Reiki treatments to animals coming out of surgery.  Many of these unfortunate souls have sustained severe abuse or neglect, and even though they may be frightened, they always seem to understand I am there to help them get better.

I have studied and practiced Reiki for nearly five years, and became a Traditional Usui Reiki Master in January, 2008.  Over the years, I have discovered the profound healing effect of Reiki on myself, my family, friends and my pets.  Having studied metaphysics and holistic healing practices for over 25 years, I came to Reiki naturally.  I wish to continue learning and striving to help beings of all types for many years to come.

What Happens During A Treatment?

I am also asked what happens during a treatment.  A Reiki treatment involves a gentle, non-invasive healing touch, which the client receives fully clothed and lying down in a relaxing environment.  The practitioner allows the flow of energy to come from a limitless source (the universe, God or Higher Power) to the patient.

You do not need to subscribe to any particular religion or dogma to receive Reiki.  The only thing the patient needs to do is be open to the universal life force energy which is always available to all of us.  This energy triggers the bodies’ natural ability to heal and brings health and well being to the recipient.

There are many healing benefits that come from a Reiki treatment.  Some examples are:

  • Deep relaxation that helps the body release stress and tension
  • It accelerates the healing process from illness, injury or surgery
  • Reiki helps with insomnia
  • It helps reduce blood pressure, relieves pain and decreases the need for pain medication

Reiki is also excellent for healing any physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual problem brought about by injury, fear, worry, anxiety and any number of negative thoughts or emotions.
